\/>is filled with movement having<br \/>different rhythms and intensities.<br \/>Things move, bodies move, materials move.<br \/>Movement opens up possibilities<br \/>and potentialities.<br \/>It is measurement that stifles<br \/>movement\u00a0<a href=\"#\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>Materials are not immutable, passive, or lifeless until<br \/>the moment we interact with them.<br \/>They participate<br \/>in our undertakings.<br \/>They live,<br \/>speak,<br \/>gesture,<br \/>and call to us.<\/p><p>We tend to think about materials from a<br \/>rational or functional viewpoint<br \/>When looking at the basic properties of fabric, there are<br \/>certain features<br \/>we consider<br \/>breathability, weight, drape, durability, softness, construction and whether<br \/>it is water-repellent.<a href=\"#\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><br \/>But affordances can extend beyond that.<a href=\"#\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>Our ideas about the world are shaped by deeply rooted cultural dichotomies<br \/>animate vs inanimate,<br \/>active vs passive,<br \/>self vs other,<br \/>human vs thing.<\/p><p>These binaries lead us, <br \/>often unconsciously, <br \/>to think of<br \/>ourselves as animate agents<br \/>who act on lifeless materials.<br \/>This conception then affects how we<br \/>see materials, how we engage with them,<br \/>and what<br \/>we create with them.<\/p><p>What if the human premise,<br \/>of only humans\u00a0having <br \/>agency, is flawed?<\/p><p>What if<br \/>materials influence us<br \/>as much as we influence them?<br \/>How might we experience materials differently<br \/>if we acknowledge them as joint participants in our interactions with them?<\/p><p>What would happen if we empower materials,<br \/>And see them not as<br \/>compliant objects, but as events?<\/p><p>How might a shift in perspective on materiality<br \/>change we read and interoret materials?<\/p><p>What if agency was relational?<br \/>Collectively distributed and<br \/>more than human?<br \/>What tools do we need to expand and think<br \/>through relations or<br \/>think about relations as distributed?<\/p><p>We could craft<br \/>vibrant social-ecological environments<br \/>where humans and nonhumans<br \/>are always in relation.<\/p><p><strong>Think about the potential<\/strong><\/p><p>The problem is that we think<br \/>that humans alone<br \/>are rational beings<br \/>and therefore we can think and<br \/>exercise intentional agency<\/p><p>Assigning anthropomorphic characteristics to things<br \/>just sounds weird<br \/>The locus for this complex relational notion<br \/>is not about particles,<br \/>atoms<br \/>or neutrons<br \/>Life is shaped by the interactions, no, the intra-acting<br \/>between them. <a href=\"#\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p><strong>Nothing acts alone.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b81f465
